Photography 1001 : Lesson 2 – How to Frame Your Image

When you are a photographer beginner, it is often that you start by following the old rules, such as the Rule of Thirds, for it is the basic of basics, the simplest rule to guide you in framing a good picture. However, there are also some people who’d suggest that following the Golden Ratio is the best way to capture the most artistic picture.

So what exactly are these two rules and which one should you go by when you no longer want to go by instinct?

In brief, the Rule of Thirds goes like this:

You put the subject of your focus on the lines that divide the frame into thirds.

As for the Golden Ratio:

You put the subject of your focus on the swirling line.

If you combine the two:

Here’s a video from DNews that will walk you through their differences in a 3 minutes:

After having a better understanding of the rules, I’m sure you are now more confident in framing a good picture. However, photography depends on your creativity, so never be restricted by the rules!
